Meet MSG David Michael Knotts, Jr - United States Army, Retired — 2025 Veteran
MSG Knotts grew up in East Texas. He enlisted in the Wyoming Army National Guard (ARWYNG) in February 2002. He attended Basic Training at FT Benning, Georgia, and Advance Individual Training at FT Jackson, South Carolina where he graduated as a Human Resource Specialist, MOS 42A. Upon graduation, he was assigned to the 115th Field Artillery Brigade, ARWYNG, Cheyenne, Wyoming.
In 2003, MSG Knotts re-classed to MOS 31B/Military Police, and was selected for a three year assignment as a Military Police with the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, 100th Missile Defense Brigade, FT Greely, Alaska. During this time he was promoted to Sergeant, and served as both a team leader and a squad leader. Additionally, MSG Knotts was inducted in the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, won the 2005 Space and Missile Defense Command NCO of the Year award, and was runner-up for the 2005 United States Army NCO of the Year award.
In 2006, MSG Knotts enlisted in the Regular Army and volunteered for an Airborne assignment. He re-classed to MOS 11B/Infantry, graduation from Airborne school, FT Benning, Georgia. He was then assigned as a squad leader with C Company (Reconnaissance, Targeting, Interdiction, and Acquisition troop), 73rd Cavalry Squadron, 82nd Airborne Division.
During this time he served in Operation Enduring Freedom, in Afghanistan for 15 months between 2007 and 2008 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Upon re-deployment from Afghanistan in 2008, MSG Knotts attended the United States Army Special Forces Assessment and Selection course, and graduated from the United States Army Special Forces Qualification Course in 2010, as an 18B, Special Forces Weapons Sergeant.
He was then assigned to SF-ODA 0215 (Combat Dive Team), 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). During this time he deployed to Iraq for six months in support of Operation New Dawn between 2010-2011, and participated in various Joint Combined Exchange Training exercises. He was also promoted to Sergeant First Class as a Senior Special Forces Weapons Sergeant.
In 2013, MSG Knotts volunteered for assignment to Stuttgart Germany, where he was assigned to SF-ODA 0211, B Company, 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). During this time he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan for six months in 2014, and he deployed in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve in Eastern Europe between 2014 and 2015. In 2017, MSG Knotts was assigned to 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). During this time he served both as the Information Warfare Detachment NCOIC, and the Tactical Cyber Detachment NCOIC for 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). He was also promoted to Master Sergeant.
MSG Knotts' military education includes the Senior Leaders' Course, Advance Leaders' Course, and Basic Leaders' Course. He is a graduate of the Special Forces Qualification course, Special Forces Weapons course, United States Army Special Operations Static Line Jump Master course, Combat Dive and Combat Dive Supervisor courses, Special Operations Target Interdiction course (Special Forces Sniper course), Infantry Mortar Leaders course, Army Instructor course, and Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE High Risk) course. MSG Knotts has an Associates Arts Degree in General Studies from American Military University.
MSG Knotts is married with three children.
On 24 February 2024, MSG Knotts retired Honorably from the United States Army.
