Meet Rob Moore, U.S. Navy — 2023 Veteran

Rob Moore was born in Neptune, New Jersey. During his senior year at Neptune High School he enlisted in the United States Navy. In January 1995 Rob attended Basic Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes and upon completion he attended and graduated Mine Warfare Training Center, Great Lakes in 1996.

After graduation Rob received his first permanent duty orders where he was assigned Mine Countermeasures Rotational Crew "Hotel" on board the USS Scout (MCM-8) in Ingleside, Texas. In January 1996, Rob's crew was re-assigned to Sasebo, Japan to become the permanent crew of the USS Patriot (MCM-7).

While on board the USS Patriot, Rob was a rig captain for minesweeping operations and the primary coxswain. In February 1997, the Patriot ran aground while in transit to Kure, Japan for a joint exercise. As a member of the "Flying Squad" (the at sea damage control team), Rob was the team leader of the Damage Control Team and coordinated the efforts to stop flooding and dewater the vessel in order to maintain its seaworthiness.

In April 1999, the Patriot was dispatched to Okinawa to assist with locating and recovering a USMC CH-53E "Super Stallion". While working in tandem with Navy EOD divers, Rob acted as coxswain for the Patriot's Rigid Bull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) and successfully recovered the remains of the four (4) USMC crew members so they could be returned to their families.

In June 1999, Rob was transferred to Special Boat Squadron 2 (SBS-2) at NAB Little Creek, Virginia. Later that year Rob was deployed to Bahrain and participated in Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations in support of the embargo against Iraq. In October 2000, his unit was deployed to Yemen in order to provide security for the USS Cole (DDG-67) as a result of the terrorist attack that occurred earlier that month.

In July 2001, Rob was forced to take a shore duty assignment and opted for the Navy's Physical Security Specialist program and reported to Lackland AFB for training. On September 4, 2001, Rob reported to Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck as a member of the installations Security Force. In the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Rob assisted in providing security at Ground Zero and assisted with recovery efforts for two weeks. In addition, he provided port security and mobile security by escorting ordnance down the 19 mile long Navy Road (Normandy Road) to the pier complex in Leonardo, New Jersey.

In Early 2003 Rob volunteered to provide security and escort members of the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps in Iraq. In October 2004 Rob Honorably discharged from the Navy and in 2005 was offered a position with the Norfolk Police Department (Norfolk, Virginia) where he stayed until 2014.

During his time with the Norfolk Police Department Rob was assigned to the department's Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team as a negotiator and logged over 150 hours with the team. Rob was also assigned to the Metro Tactical Unit (Bike Unit) and was instrumental with taking guns and illegal narcotics off the street.

During his time there, he was awarded the department's Distinguished Service Medal for apprehending three armed subjects while in the commission of a robbery. Rob was twice decorated with the department's Life Saving Medal for providing lifesaving Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation on two separate incidents.

In October 2013, Rob left the Norfolk Police Department and was hired by the Navy Region's Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services department at the Naval Station in Norfolk. In December 2015, Rob was as promoted and transferred to Naval Weapon Station Earle where he was promoted to Battalion Chief for Fire Prevention. While assigned at Earle, Rob became the Lead Fire Investigator for his District (NWS Earle, Philadelphia Navy Yard, NSA Northeast Philadelphia and NSA Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania).

Through his military and police service Rob has earned his B.A. in Administration of Justice from St. Leo's University and an A.S. in Fire Science from Tidewater Community College. Rob is married and resides in Neptune, New Jersey with his wife and struggles each day with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Rob is a vocal advocate for mental health programs for both Veterans and First Responders. Rob is also the Peer Support Team Leader for Navy Fire & Emergency Services District.
