Meet Matt Pundyk — 2014 Wounded Veteran

Matt Pundyk joined the U.S. Army as a 19D, Cavalry Scout in February 2012 and was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division, 8/1 Cav, Fort Lewis Washington.

In April 2012 Matt was deployed to Panjawai, Afghanistan, in the Southern Greenbelt. On May 25, 2012, while escorting EOD on a dismounted patrol, Matt stepped on and detonated a pressure plate IED.

Matt suffered a traumatic amputation of his left leg, neurological damage to his left arm and hand, and tendon damage to his right leg. He was medically evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany and then to Brooks Army Medical Center in Texas. Matt lived at the (WTB) Warrior Transition Battalion until he was medically retired in February 2014.

Matt currently lives in New Braunfels, Texas where he continues to recover from his injuries. He has required additional surgeries on his stump in an effort to fit him with a prosthetic. He recently suffered a major setback when he developed a severe infection (on May 14, 2014) and had to be hospitalized.

Matt has always loved dogs and volunteers all his available time at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas working dog program.

Service K9 Rush was delivered to Matt on May 20, 2014.
