Meet Kyra Schmeisser, U.S.M.C. — 2021 Veteran

Kyra Schmeisser joined the United States Marine Corps in February 2001. Out of boot camp from Parris Island, SC, she went to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO for Military Police school. Her first duty station was Camp Pendleton, CA where she worked as a garrison Military Police officer at the Provost Marshals Office (PMO). She worked as a patrol officer and later as a Community Relations Liaison/School Resource Officer for the schools on base.

In October 2005, she received orders to CSSG-3 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay and split her time between being a garrison MP and field MP. While stationed there, she worked as an accident investigator, physical security officer and a patrol officer. She was attached to 3/3 for multiple training exercises.

In April 2009, she PCS'd to Camp Lejeune, NC as part of 2nd Law Enforcement Bn. While there, she became a Combat Marksmanship Instructor, Non-Lethal Individual Weapons Instructor and a black belt (1st degree) in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP). She was deployed to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan in October 2009 with 5/10 and was later attached to 3/6 during the Battle for Marjah (Operation Moshtarak).

While deployed, she served as the Anti-Terrorism Officer (ATO) and was also part of a Personal Security Detail (PSD). She was again deployed to Afghanistan from June 2010 -June 2011 under a joint command with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) as part of their Force Protection/PSD team. She led over 1,600 ground movements and logged over 350 flight hours as helicopter security, through 18 different provinces, for the Afghanistan Engineer District – North (AED-N), which constantly took insurgent small arms fire (SAF).

In April 2012, she received orders to HQ Squadron at MCAS Miramar, CA and the Substance Abuse Control Officer (SACO) for the squadron, enforcing the Marine Corps zero tolerance policy. She was discharged in April 2014 as a Staff Sargent. Some of her awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, NATO Medal – ISAF Afghanistan.
