Meet David Calhoun — 2015 Veteran

David Calhoun was born and raised in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. He joined the Army National guard in 1985. He was in the National Guard for six years. In 1996 he joined the Army Reserves and served therein until 1998 when he decided to serve in active duty.

During his time in service he deployed four times to three different locations. His first deployment was to Iraq during Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He spent five months there in 1991. During his second deployment he went to Bosnia for eight months in 1998 and 1999. His third deployment was to Kosovo in 2000 where he spent seven months. His final deployment was back to Iraq for operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in 2002. He was there for eight months during this deployment.

During his final deployment he was severely injured during a roadside bombing. He was traveling in a Humvee with his captain and his lieutenant when the bomb went off. He sustained injuries to his knees having his knee caps blown out, resulting in him having to have them surgically reattached. He had his helmet blown off causing him to suffer a traumatic brain injury. Also a result from the blast, he has some residual hearing loss and suffers migraines.

He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His body still has shrapnel all through him. One of those pieces of shrapnel is lodged in his pancreas causing him to have diabetes. The piece was too large to be able to be surgically removed.

David was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia when he was injured. He was honorably discharged from the army in October of 2004. Since November 2013 he has been residing in Quincy, Florida. He lives there with his wife and their youngest son.
