Meet Barbara DeAngelo, U.S.M.C. — 2023 Veteran

Barbara DeAngelo was born and raised in Brielle, New Jersey. After graduating from Manasquan High School in 1988 she followed in her father's footsteps and joined the United States Marine Corps.

Barbara attended bootcamp at MCRD Parris Island in August of 1988 and successfully graduated in October 1988. Being assigned the MOS of 1341 Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic, she attended school at Courthouse Bay Engineer School at Camp Lejeune.

When she completed engineer school in 1989, she was sent to her 1st duty station, Camp Foster in Okinawa where she joined 3rd FSSG, 3rd Landing Support Battalion, LSE Co.

After a year overseas she was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in 1990 with Marine Air Control Group 28, H&S Company, Utilities. During this time the Gulf War began. Her unit deployed, however she did not because she had just given birth to her oldest daughter.

Barbara completed her four years in the USMC and was Honorably Discharged in 1992 to raise her daughters.

Since completing her time in the Marine Corps, she has worked hard to be an advocate for veterans and their causes. She has been a Life Member of the Marine Corps League for 15 years. Being a Charter Member of the Jersey Shore Marines Detachment 1319. She is a member of the American Legion Post 348 and a member of the 348 Legion Riders. She volunteered for over eight years with the Troopers Assisting Troops program.

After seeing how service animals helped Veterans with PTSD recover from trauma, she, her husband Joe and good friend Brian Gillespie began the Warrior Fund with the Marine Corps League. They raise funds throughout the Marine Corps League to sponsor service dogs. The have proudly sponsored five dogs since they began in 2018.

After the passing of her father "Bud" in 2015, she began working at Rutgers University for the Vets4Warriors program where she was the overnight supervisor for the Veteran peer-to-peer call line. In 2023 she was offered the position of Operations Manager with Vetwork in Forked River. Vetwork helps Ocean County veterans with immediate needs such as transportation, food and shelter.

Barbara and her husband Joe, also a USMC Veteran, live in Point Pleasant Boro, New Jersey. They have 6 children and 3 grandchildren.
